Debbie McMahon
Guest Faculty Summer 2012

Debbie McMahon studied Philosophy and Theater at Connecticut College, earned an MA at NYU in Performance Studies and completed the PTP program at Dell’Arte;  she is now on the board of the DAI Alumni Association.  As artistic director of Grand Guignolers (www.grandguignolers.com) in Los Angeles, she creates, directs and performs in critically acclaimed productions blending traditional physical theater genres: Commedia dell’arte, clown, melodrama, Grand Guignol, dance, magic, and puppetry (with naughty French finger puppets, les petits guignolers).  Decked out patrons enjoy the 1920s Parisian event-like pre-show atmosphere with Pierrots, gypsy jazz and Absinthe served by the resident fairy.  In March, the LA Drama Critics Circle presented the Grand Guignolers with an honorary award for special effects for Absinthe, Opium and Magic: 1920s Shanghai, which they graciously accepted with a beheading.  The production sold out in Hollywood for three months before a second run at The Actors’ Gang upon invitation of artistic director, Tim Robbins.  Past shows include A Very Grand Guignol Christmas and A Grand Guignol Children’s Show* (*NOT for Children).  Currently, Debbie teaches “melodrama workouts” with the Guignolers, directed The Green Bird (commedia dell’arte) for USC’s MFA program, and clowns for Cirque du Soleil, promoting their upcoming show, Iris, at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.  Upcoming includes: children’s theater with sidekick company, The Punchkins, and a Guignoler spectacle production combining carnival and the French Revolution with sausages, a carousel, giant puppets, a chorus of devils and a guillotine.
